"Rise Again", by Chris Luther
"Rise Again", is a song about being at a low point, and wanting to shed the negative or rise again. I wrote the song with co-writer Krystianna Livernash. After the Nashville Retreat in 2021, we teamed up together to try and write a campfire rock type song. When I asked her how she came up with the title she said, "I was just feeling frustrated and tired of being down all the time, I just wanted to rise again".
After a couple of days the song came to me. The song basically spilled out over the page, and without much thought it was pretty much completed. I was listening to a Steely Dan song that had some add9 chords to it, and I just got the melody in my head. It was a positive song with a high energy feel to it. I was also listening to a lot of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Led Zeppelin III at the time. I am not sure how much of that came out here, but it is supposed to be a creative folksy song.
Krystianna came up with the title, but I put the rest together. She helped me throughout the whole process. I wanted to give her credit where it was due, even though she abdicated her part. I guess it goes like that sometimes. Check out some of her music on Spotify.
The lyrics are coming from a creative persons point of view, but it applies to everyone. It seems like the arts always fighting for a place at the table, these days. It is a common theme for songwriters I believe. We tend to suffer a lot of grief. I was hoping to capture artists, poets, and musicians sitting around a campfire and creating things to share with the world.
This song is different from my recently released songs. It has more of a folk rock/campfire feel to it. I have a whole bunch these that I am working on for an EP. Don't worry, the rock and punk stuff is still cooking in the oven!
